Patient Testimonial from an Internist
Date: 10-25-2010
At age 61, I decided to seek expert evaluation and advice regarding long-present varicosities in both lower legs. As a physician I knew that, beyond the cosmetic aspects and mild discomfort related to these varicosities, the risk for ulceration within the stasis-damaged skin would increase over time. Moreover, I knew if I ever experienced an injury (e.g., laceration, burn, etc.) in these areas, bleeding and/or healing would be problematic with high risk for complications.

I consulted Dr. Mahadevan and after physical and ultrasound evaluations, three laser procedures followed by micro-phlebectomies under general anesthesia were recommended. After some initial hesitance due to a busy work schedule, I decided I'd put off getting care long enough and should undergo the recommended procedures.

I am pleased to offer a few observations and comments regarding Dr. M and his staff and my results:

     1. Dr. Mahadevan is a highly trained and very dedicated surgeon.

     2. Atlanta Vein Specialists is a patient-focused practice with a caring and highly
         professional staff.

     3. All findings, procedures and what to expect were explained to my satisfaction
         before the procedures were done.

     4. My three general anesthesia experiences were pleasant.

     5. My Post-op follow-up was easily scheduled.

     6. I underwent the three procedures between April and May 2010. My post-op leg
discomfort and some residual superficial numbness occurred just as Dr. M had
described to me before the surgeries. I missed just a half day or so from work
each time and I was able to resume most of my normal activities within 12 to 24
hours of each procedure. I gradually resumed my fairly vigorous physical
exercise within a couple of days of each procedure. In fact, I ran in and
enjoyed my 35th Peachtree Road Race 10k on July 4.

     7. My legs look and feel better and within just a few months post-op, the few
little scars are becoming harder to find. Excellent results overall in my
view. I'm happy I made the decisions to finally seek care and Dr. M/Atlanta
Vein Specialists were a great choice for me.

As with any surgical procedure, individual results may vary and all options and potential risks with any surgery or anesthesia should be considered before opting for surgery. As always, persons with complex medical histories should likewise seek the agreement of their primary care physician before undergoing any elective surgery.

The effect of endovenous laser ablation on restless legs syndrome
Date: 04-05-2010
Venous disease was proposed as a cause of restless legs syndrome (RLS) by Dr Karl A Ekbom in 1944, but has since remained largely unexplored. This study examines the effect of endovenous laser ablation (ELA) in patients with concurrent RLS and duplex-proven superficial venous insufficiency (SVI).
